4 Tips To Reach Your Target Test Score

What goes into a great set of test scores?

There is more that goes into a great test score than just mastering its content and strategies (though that certainly helps!). In fact, when it comes to effective test preparation, learning how to navigate a test is just as important as understanding its content. Successfully mastering a standardized test is much like playing a game: when you know the rules, have the proper strategies in place, and condition daily, you increase your chances of beating the test.

Based on TA’s experience working with thousands of ACT and SAT students, here are four things to keep in mind about scoring well on these kinds of standardized tests:

1) EVERY TEST IS A PERFORMANCE
How you perform on a test is contingent on how you’re feeling that day, much like with a sports game. Some performances go well, and other times our nerves or distractions get the best of us. Remind your child to be patient and know that some test performances will be better than others. 
 

2) SET YOURSELF UP FOR SUCCESS
Strong test-takers consistently get a good night’s sleep multiple nights preceding the test. They eat a protein-heavy breakfast in the morning and bring ample snacks and water to the test to make sure they keep their energy up.
 

3) MINDSET IS KEY
Feeling good about yourself going into a test is important. Bolster your children's confidence by encouraging them to stay positive and helping them to manage their anxiety. Our suggestions: take some deep breaths or visualize their tutors cheering them on!
 

4) TEST PREP IS LIKE CONDITIONING
Practicing for a standardized test, like learning a foreign language or preparing for a big performance, requires daily work. Staying absorbed in the test through daily practice is integral to improving scores.
