How to Maximize Your Summers to Build the Best College Resume
Summer is a welcome break from the chaos of the school year, but ideally, our high school students are also using their summers as opportunities to hone their crafts, build their college resumes, and prep for the year ahead.
I know that it can be difficult to narrow down the best options for your children's summer plans, so as summer approaches, I thought I’d help anticipate, by 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grades, some of the best ways that your children can spend their summer!
The Rising 9th Grader
How to Get Ahead:
- Preview Geometry and start organizing theorems in advance of the school year
- Refine writing skills in preparation for the transition from middle to high school writing

The Rising 10th Grader
How to Get Ahead:
Preview Chemistry and Algebra II and get oriented to the kind of difficult math to expect from the year ahead

The Rising 11th Grader
How to Get Ahead:
- Choose between the ACT and the SAT (this includes scheduling full-length diagnostics and consultations with one of our program directors) to ensure plenty of time for practice and planning.
- Plan ahead for SAT Subject Tests based on school requirements and academic strengths

The Rising 11th Grader
How to Get Ahead:
- Download the Common Application and complete any supplementary essays for first choices (early decision or action schools) by the end of the summer.
- Save any edits to the personal statement and requests for teacher recommendations for the fall, as some schools are a bit tardy in releasing their supplementary essays/materials.
